KUCHING, 12 May 2021 – True to the channel’s slogan, ‘Fresh and Inspiring’, TVS chooses to be different again this time, dolling up our lady anchors in selendang and selayah keringkam for news programmes on Hari Raya.
Keringkam is a timeless piece worn by the Sarawak Malay ladies. Its distinctive motifs of various intricate embroidery patterns from gold and silver are what makes keringkam now a family heirloom piece. Donning of keringkam by TVS news anchors of various races portrays the unity to empower women in the broadcast industry while maintaining the cultural heritage of Sarawak.
Our news anchors, Marzella Sigai for Iban News at 4.00 pm and 7.00 pm, Jessica John for Iban News at 11.00 am and TVS Utama at 8.00 pm, Handy Gui for Ringkas at 12.00 pm and English News at 5.00 pm, and Jeerydine Chan for Re Bao mandarin news at 6.00 pm will all be wearing keringkam.
TVS English News Anchor, Handy Gui said, “I feel a sense of pride donning the Keringkam and Songket although I am not of a Melayu descent. However, growing up in a multicultural country has somehow made us one hence, when given the opportunity to wear and promote the Malay culture, I can proudly say that it is of the utmost pleasure.”
“Putting on the Keringkam for the first time, I feel like we are one regardless of religion and race. Being able to blend into other cultures makes me extremely proud to be a Sarawakian.“ said Jeerydine Chan, TVS Chinese News Anchor.
